L.A. makes room for more than 27,000 new residents; Congressional candidate woos Berniecrats; Lincoln High volleyball team celebrates turnaround

  • The City of Los Angeles added an estimated 27,133 new residents between July 1, 2015 and July 1, 2016. That’s the second largest numeric gain among U.S. cities, according to a U.S. Census update (Phoenix lead the nation with a gain of 32,113 ). The most recent update brings the total number of people living in Los Angeles to 3,976,322.
  • Jimmy Gomez appears to be winning over some Berniecrats and other progressive voters as he campaigns against Robert Lee Ahn in the 34th Congressional District runoff. Gomez is viewed as the establishment candidate who has been supported by major party groups and contributors. “The Bernie vote is becoming more and more important as time goes on,” said one political strategist.   • The Boys Volleyball Team at Lincoln High in Lincoln Heights was celebrating this week after winning a CIF L.A. City Division championship, marking a big turnaround for the team. School Yard
