Morning Report

  • More than 75% of the contributions raised by congressional candidates  Jimmy Gomez  and  Robert Lee Ahn  have come from outside the 34th Congressional District they are seeking to represent, reports the L.A. Times. Within the district, Gomez has had the most fundraising success in Northeast L.A. while Ahn has received strong financial backing from Koreatown. While Gomez has raised $961,000 in preparation for the June 6 runoff election, Ahn has a financial lead by loaning himself $500,000 in addition to receiving $874,000 in contributions . The 34th Congressional District  includes Boyle Heights, City Terrace, El Sereno, Lincoln Heights, Montecito Heights, Northeast L.A., southern Echo Park and other communities.
  • A protest was held Thursday in Boyle Heights over the detention of immigration rights activist and Cal State L.A. student Claudia Rueda, who was taken into custody by Border Patrol agents after her visa had expired. Rueda’s supporters claim that she was picked up by agents in retaliation for speaking out against the arrest of her mother by the Border Patrol in April. Daily News
