ECHO PARK –– Why is the Gold Room closed? That’s what fans of the Sunset Boulevard bar have been asking for the past six weeks since the front door was locked shut. That has deprived patrons of their post- and pre- Dodger game micheladas and prompted at least one customer to post a Gold Room memory on Instagram. Yelp reports the dive bar has closed but that does not look to be permanent.
The Gold Room was last open sometime in early May, shortly before a man was stabbed on the block while buying food at a taco truck. The bar had already been closed for several days to make “fixes” and other changes, so no customers were present at the time of the May 2 stabbing, a person with the Gold Room told The Eastsider at the time.
An online check of the Gold Room’s state alcohol license shows that Jose Perez remains the owner and there’s no sign of the license being transferred, sold or suspended. A note that had announced “Temporary Close” near the entrance eventually fell to the floor.
A visit to the Gold Room on Tuesday found that the tiny entrance had been painted a new shade of gray while there were sounds of construction — and loud music — inside. After repeated knocks on the door, a workman emerged. He said the bar would be reopening but didn’t know when.
The bar underwent an extensive renovation in 2009 that created a more lounge-like feel but kept a dive-bar vibe.
What will await patrons when the Gold Room reopens this time? Stay tuned.
