Robbery suspect and shotgun take a dip in Echo Park Lake

ECHO PARK — A robbery suspect is in custody after leading police on a short foot pursuit Monday night that ended in Echo Park Lake.

Officers were called to the scene of an attempted robbery near Laguna and Echo Park avenues at about 10 p.m. last night, said Sgt. Frank Banuelos with LAPD’s Rampart Division. A helicopter was called to the scene and helped locate the suspect in the park.

After a brief foot pursuit, the suspect jumped into the lake and tossed a backpack into the water. After a couple of minutes, the suspect came out of the lake and was taken into custody without incident, said Banuelos.

The backpack, which contained a shotgun, was recovered from the lake, he said.
