BOYLE HEIGHTS — Police said that a 27-year-old man who sexually assaulted a 16-year-old girl that he had met and befriended at East Los Angeles College might have attacked other victims.

Joao Affonso has been charged with three counts of sexual assault that took place in Boyle Heights where he lived. Affonso is free on $200,000 bail after having been arrested last month.

Police today said that Affonso and the victim were both students at the East L.A. College, where they met at the college cafeteria. Affonso and the juvenile studied together in empty classrooms and went out for coffee before the assault took place.

Officials said they are aware of at least one more potential juvenile victim but that investigation is ongoing. Police fear there might be other victims who have also not come forward.

“Unfortunately these girls felt comfortable enough with this individual,” said Ruby Flores, commanding officer of the LAPD Hollenbeck Division, during an afternoon news conference. “He befriended them and then took advantage of them and eventually sexually assaulted them.”

Anyone with information is asked to call the LAPD Hollenbeck Division at (323)342-8900.
