Motorists are being advised to avoid the 5 Freeway near Mission Road after traffic lanes in Boyle Heights and Lincoln Heights were shut down during the investigation of a fatal shooting of a pedestrian by a CHP officer right after midnight.
KTLA reports that the man, who was armed with a knife, was walking near the fast lane of the freeway. Officers initially used a stun gun and other non-lethal measures before opening fire, killing the man.
The southbound lanes of the 5 had been reopened by about 8:45 am, the CHP said on Twitter. However, the northbound lanes near Mission Road remained closed. Also, the transition road from the westbound 10 Freeway to the northbound 5 is also still shut down.
