Smoke from Verdugo Mountains fire visible for miles around

ATWATER VILLAGE — Black clouds of smoke are spreading across the sky this afternoon after a brush broke out in the Verdugo Mountains near Sunland. The fire has forced the closure of the 210 Freeway and prompted some evacuations, reports The L.A. Times.  The fire has consumed about 500 acres and about 50 homes are threatened, the L.A. Fire Department said on Twitter at about 5 pm.
