EAST LOS ANGELES — The Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department is investigating a deputy-involved shooting that left one man dead Tuesday night after he allegedly took control of a patrol vehicle and drove it in the direction of an officer.
The shooting happened at about 10 p.m. in the 5000 block of East 3rd Street after the deputies responded to a call of a man “acting suspiciously” in an apartment complex parking structure next to the East Los Angeles Sheriff’s Station, according to a statement released by LASD. Witnesses said the suspect was looking inside vehicles on the lower level of the parking structure of the Alta Vista Apartments.
Deputies located the suspect when they entered the lower level of the parking structure. The suspect appeared to be trying to hide from deputies as they exited their vehicle.
When the deputies attempted to detain the suspect, he ran past them and appeared to be running to their patrol vehicle, according to the statement. One deputy fired a taser at the suspect, fearing he would enter the patrol vehicle, but the taser was ineffective.
The suspect then entered the patrol vehicle, a sedan, and drove in the direction of the second deputy, at which time the deputy-involved shooting occurred, authorities said. It is unknown if the patrol car was equipped with an anti-theft device, authorities said.
The suspect, described as a Latino who appears to be 35 years of age, was struck in the upper torso and was pronounced dead at the scene. No civilians or deputies were injured. The investigation is ongoing.
This deputy-involved shooting comes two days after a 16-year-old boy was shot and killed by sheriff’s deputies in South Los Angeles.
