Found a blue / grey female pit bull Friday 1/27/12 in the Hyperion/Rowena area. no tags, no chip. We had to take her to the North Central Animal Shelter on Saturday the 28th. If her owner is not found, her adoption day will be Thursday the 2nd (2/2/12). She is super people friendly and deserves to find her home as soon as possible. If you recognize her please go to the shelter to take a look!!!

After many weeks of deliberating and holding public hearings, the Volunteer Redistricting Commission has revealed their recommendation for the new boundaries for our cities 15 Council Districts. The Commission is tasked every 10 years with redrawing the boundaries to balance population and demographics amongst the 15 Districts.  In this past Census cycle, population in the urban core shrank significantly while population growth in the Valley grew.

What does this mean for the Echo Park/Elysian Park area?  Well, very little so far. At the center of the “Urban Core” area needing to take on population, Echo Park is currently divided between CD 1 and CD 13, currently helmed by Councilman’s Ed P. Reyes and Eric Garcetti, respectively.   Both Councilman are termed out due to 12 year term limits and leave an opportunity for hopefuls who live in the districts – or ones who conveniently move into the districts – to vie for the council seat.

The NELAart Micro-Grant Program continues February 26, 2012, at Anatomy Fitness 5215 York Blvd in Highland Park. Tickets go on sale at The Glass Studio 5052 York Blvd. LA 90042 on Feb. 10. Tickets for the January event sold out in 5 days.

The NELAart micro-grant events are based on similar programs all around the world, moving arts funding away from a top-down model to one where the community engages in funding the arts with direct, personal contact between donors and artists. Anyone can be an art patron.

Artists submit proposals to NELAart. A rotating panel chooses four proposals to present at the event. At the event there will be food, and conversation, and after the presentations, the audience choice is given the micro-grant of the admission dollars.

Sadly, but not surprisingly, a “perfect storm” is making landfall on January 25 when the Local Agency Formation Commission (LAFCO) is set to make what will likely be the final decision on the proposed incorporation of East Los Angeles. LAFCO is the county agency charged to determine if a proposed new city can be created. To that end, LAFCO must determine if a proposed city is “financially viable.” At its upcoming special meeting, LAFCO’s Executive Officer will present its final report to the commissioners. An advanced copy, just released, concludes that “East Los Angeles does not generate enough revenue to sustain a healthy and financially sound city. The Executive Officer recommends that the Commission disapprove the incorporation request.”

The current incorporation effort has been ongoing for about four years, while the formal application for incorporation to LAFCO was made in April 2009 by the proponents, a group known as ELARA. As a lifelong resident of East L.A., I was deeply interested in this issue from the beginning, spent considerable time researching it and even volunteered in the effort for some time. However, as I analyzed the relevant issues in the context of the “rules” that applied, it became clear to me early on that there were fatal flaws that threatened the outcome and left no other conclusion than that which is now being borne out as this proposal sunsets. You see, the perfect storm that derailed this effort came in several fronts which were critical issues to the success of this effort:

Residents of Eagle Rock, Highland Park and other nearby neighborhoods who love to sing are invited to join the Occidental College Chorus.  This large ensemble is comprised of Occidental students, alumni, employees and local community members, and practice is every Monday night, 7:30-9:45 p.m. at Booth Hall on the College campus. The choir sings classical, gospel and pop numbers. Our big spring concert is April 28. Interested folks should contact choral program director Desiree Lavertu at lavertu@oxy.edu

We want Oxy to be an integral part of the larger community, so we hope a few local singers will join us!

I found [this older dog] with no collar wandering Silver Lake Blvd near Berkley. I think he’s a Cocker Spaniel mix (?).  He may be deaf as he responds to nothing. He’s definitely older and has a bit of a crooked lower jaw. I can be reached via email Frenchbot@hotmail.com

WHAT: Urban planner James Rojas will lead the community in “Rethinking Glendale Blvd.,” a free interactive workshop to beautify a car-clogged corridor in the Echo Park neighborhood. Rojas invites adults and children to use colorful blocks and recycled objects to shape their visions toward a revitalized Glendale Boulevard.  The event is a collaborative effort between Rojas, community organizer Josh Post and Echo Park Patch.com.

    WHEN:  Saturday, January 14, 2012 from 10 a.m.-Noon

WHERE:  Echo Country Outpost, 1770 Glendale Blvd., in Echo Park

    WHO:
    James Rojas, Urban Planner
    Josh Post, community organizer
    Participating adults and children

    BACKGROUND:
In the early 1900s, the area of Glendale Blvd. between the Glendale Freeway (CA Highway 2) and Berkeley Avenue, then known as Edendale, was home to silent movie studios, rail travel and a growing artist community. The same five-block stretch of Glendale Blvd. has deteriorated during the past decades. Trash-strewn sidewalks, graffiti-scarred warehouses and weed-infested lots mar this historic corridor.
In 2011, community organizer Josh Post, who recently filed papers to run for Los Angeles City Council, led an effort to begin revitalization of this neglected area.  Saturday’s workshop follows Post’s neighborhood clean-up in November that drew more than 50 locals who bagged trash, pulled weeds and wiped-out graffiti.
During the Saturday workshop, participates will create small-scale models of their visions of a renewed Glendale Blvd. The ideas gathered from the event will be shared with local government, community groups and residents for future revitalization projects.
