The NELAart Micro-Grant Program continues February 26, 2012, at Anatomy Fitness 5215 York Blvd in Highland Park. Tickets go on sale at The Glass Studio 5052 York Blvd. LA 90042 on Feb. 10. Tickets for the January event sold out in 5 days.

The NELAart micro-grant events are based on similar programs all around the world, moving arts funding away from a top-down model to one where the community engages in funding the arts with direct, personal contact between donors and artists. Anyone can be an art patron.

Artists submit proposals to NELAart. A rotating panel chooses four proposals to present at the event. At the event there will be food, and conversation, and after the presentations, the audience choice is given the micro-grant of the admission dollars.

WHAT: Urban planner James Rojas will lead the community in “Rethinking Glendale Blvd.,” a free interactive workshop to beautify a car-clogged corridor in the Echo Park neighborhood. Rojas invites adults and children to use colorful blocks and recycled objects to shape their visions toward a revitalized Glendale Boulevard.  The event is a collaborative effort between Rojas, community organizer Josh Post and Echo Park Patch.com.

    WHEN:  Saturday, January 14, 2012 from 10 a.m.-Noon

WHERE:  Echo Country Outpost, 1770 Glendale Blvd., in Echo Park

    WHO:
    James Rojas, Urban Planner
    Josh Post, community organizer
    Participating adults and children

    BACKGROUND:
In the early 1900s, the area of Glendale Blvd. between the Glendale Freeway (CA Highway 2) and Berkeley Avenue, then known as Edendale, was home to silent movie studios, rail travel and a growing artist community. The same five-block stretch of Glendale Blvd. has deteriorated during the past decades. Trash-strewn sidewalks, graffiti-scarred warehouses and weed-infested lots mar this historic corridor.
In 2011, community organizer Josh Post, who recently filed papers to run for Los Angeles City Council, led an effort to begin revitalization of this neglected area.  Saturday’s workshop follows Post’s neighborhood clean-up in November that drew more than 50 locals who bagged trash, pulled weeds and wiped-out graffiti.
During the Saturday workshop, participates will create small-scale models of their visions of a renewed Glendale Blvd. The ideas gathered from the event will be shared with local government, community groups and residents for future revitalization projects.

To address the thousands of palm fronds and tree branches that still litter El Sereno streets, we were able to secure from Sanitation large trucks to remove as much debris as possible on Saturday morning [Dec 10]. The office of Councilmember Jose Huizar, the Department of Sanitation and a number of local volunteers will join to assist in the clean-up effort. Although Sanitation has been working round the clock, including picking up trash bags filled with green refuse from your curbside, we will be working together to make a consorted effort in assisting with cleaning-up our streets. Please join us as we will meet at the Constituent Service Center at 4927 E Huntington Dr. at 8:30AM. For more information contact CD14 Office at 323-226-1646.
