CaCao Mexicatessen in Eagle Rock is planning to expand its dining and deli areas and also serve beer and wine to complement its Mexican dishes.  Andy Lujan said his Colorado Boulevard restaurant and store will be adding between 15 to 20 seats and is seeking permission from city and state agencies to serve beer and wine.  “The expansion is intended to add a more spacious and comfortable space for our customers,” said Lujan via email. “Currently, for dine-in seating, we have been forced to cram a lot of tables together into a small space that is a  bit uncomfortable for our guests.”

The restaurant would serve beer and wine that pairs well with Mexican food, including wine imported from the Valle de Guadalupe and other Mexican wine growing regions in addition to wine from Mexican-owned vineyards in Napa Valley and Sonoma, Lujan said. “Our focus will always be about our food . The beer and wine will hopefully be compliments to our menu but not the main focus.”

The Echo Park neighborhood council met on Tuesday night to consider proposals to improve attendance and conduct in a meeting that was punctuated by heated exchanges between board members and yelling and screaming by members of the public. The  meeting began 20 minutes late as a lack of a quorum prevented the council from taking up an agenda that – ironically – included a proposal to make it easier to conduct committee meetings with fewer members present. Once enough voting members showed up, the board of governors approved  two new rules regulating speaking time and conduct, the passage of which triggered some tense remarks among the sharply divided board. “This board is a failure,” said member Stephen Stickler.

Public comment ensued, with community members yelling out of turn and prompting a defensive stance from the board leadership.

Eastside Mix: Thursday night shows feature Meat Puppets and Booker T.

Silver Lake's Anti-Records follows a new course with Booker T.

    Thursday, June 16, 2011

    By Alfred Montez

Tonight, Thursday June 16, is going to be a busy one  for Eastside music fans, with two great shows to pick from. Meat Puppets, the legendary and highly influential band, will be taking over The Echo for a rare SoCal appearance. Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain paid tribute  to the band, one of his favorites, by covering three of their tunes and made sure people knew about  their “Unplugged, live in New York” album.  Nirvana also featured “On A Plain” on their seminal Nevermind album. These covers thrust the small, experimental rock group into the national spotlight. The fame from that era combined with their crafty songs have carried them through ever since.

Their latest effort, “Lollipop“, released earlier this year, was a bit of an experiment. The band went into the studio with a clean palette, no music was written for the sessions, and it was all done  by the seat of their pants. Lollipop stands strong with the other Meat Puppets releases, perhaps only a bit more polished and developed as a band. The Echo Park show kicks off at 8 p.m. Cost is $15, and it’s an 18 and over event.

    Booker T. @ The Satellite

The other big show tonight night is Booker T. at The Satellite in Silver Lake  For those of us who have heard his most recent  album, “The Road From Memphis,” the expectations are set extremely high for this show.  The album has won over new fans, convinced old fans of his integrity and re-established Booker T. Jones as a musical force, with a past and future that will shape bands and songwriting for a long time to come.  Anti- Records’ signing and promotion of Booker T. has set a new standard and direction for the well-known Silver Lake indie label, and the response has been tremendous.

Known for such acts as Tom Waits, Sean Rowe, and Mavis Staples, Anti-Records has defied pop trends, and gone in a direction stressing substance over marketability, with beautiful results.  Questlove produced most of the beats on this latest record with his foot at a drum kit rather than on a beat machine.  The analog feel mixed with the soulful grooves and retro organ make for an awesome album and show.  Doors open  at 8:30 p.m. for the 21-and-over show at 9 p.m. Admission is $20.
