Luke Davies, award-winning Australian poet and novelist, will read and discuss his work, including the epic poem Interferon Psalms, at the February installment of Slake after Dark. The event begins at 7 p.m. on Thursday, February 9, at innovation-and-arts complex Atwater Crossing. The event will feature live music from Yellow Red Sparks. RSVP
Luke Davies’ work has moved far beyond the small-but-passionate readership of Australian poetry. Aside from being a Slake contributor, he is the author of three novels, including the cult best-seller Candy, God of Speed, a historical novel about Howard Hughes, and four volumes of poetry, including Totem, which won the Age Book of the Year Award. He won the Australian Film Institute’s Best Screenplay Award for his adaptation of Candy, which starred the late Heath Ledger. Davies is a film critic and essayist. His essay “The Cisco Kid” on cult film Cisco Pike in Slake’s debut issue, “Still Life,” was a finalist for a Southern California Journalism Award.
Yellow Red Sparks play haunting, melodic folk rock and currently hold a top-three spot in thedelimagazine.com’s online poll of best emerging bands.
