A decent donut is a fairly easy find, but a stellar one? That can be an enigma unless you’re willing to drive to Inglewood or Glendora, which is quite a commitment to quench one little donut craving. It’s not like there’s a shortage of donut shops on this side of town. They’re as ubiquitous in this corner as any other in Los Angeles—just pull into any strip mall, and you can probably emerge with a bearclaw or cruller in seconds. No sweat. But, let’s be honest: it will most likely be just so-so, all kinds of ho-hum, a little waxy, on the dry side, too dense, or just plain eh.

    You deserve better.

That’s why I’m letting you in on the best kept donut secret in Hermon. If you passed by it, you wouldn’t even give it a second glance. There’s no gigantic, beacon-like donut sign to reel you in, no buzz to spark your curiosity… nothing.

The owners who are trying to sell this 900-square-foot bungalow in Hermon for $379,000 have been closely following the flipper handbook: the brightly colored front door contrasts against gray siding; the interior features wood floors and open ceilings; the listing plays up the proximity to the neighborhood coffee house and park.  These are all features that have proven popular with buyers. But then the listing for the Redfield Avenue house – which sold for $195,000 in June, according to Redfin – says something that will rankle many Hermon residents:

Welcome to Hermon, Founded 1903. This historic neighborhood, now part of Highland Park …

Oh, oh. The Highland Park takeover of Hermon would be news to the residents of the small but proud community. Not only is Hermon located across the Arroyo Seco Parkway from Highland Park, community leaders recently undertook an effort to form their own neighborhood council.

    Drawing by Jolino Byrd

The Friends of Hermon Dog Park have been trying for several years now to build a dog-centric sculpture for the freeway-adjacent dog park. But, after watching two previously approved projects fall through, the group has high hopes for its third selection, an approximately five-foot-high sculpture called “Hermon the Ball” (pictured).

Renderings of the proposed sculpture by Jolino Beserra have been sent to the Recreation and Parks Department for review, and other community groups will also have a chance to weigh in, said Hermon community activist Wendi Riser. Riser and the Friends of  Hermon Dog Park have been through this before.

Poodles and chihuahuas need not apply.  Los Angeles International Charter High School, home of the Bulldogs, has put out the word that it is seeking a suitable canine mascot that is comfortable with screaming crowds and cheerleaders. Wendi Riser, author of the All Things Hermon newsletter, describes what the school is looking for:

Know of a bulldog that was meant for greater glory?  How about being an official high school mascot?  L.A. International Charter High School (the Bulldogs), in Hermon, is looking for just that — one ruggedly handsome “bully” to serve as their official mascot.  The cheerleading squad would love to have him join them for Tuesday-Thursday games throughout the year, from approximately 3 p.m. to 5 P.M. and even pep rallies every last Monday of the month around 2 p.m.

Bulldog owners are asked to call a Paola, the Hermon school’s cheerleading coach at (323) 257-1499.

Park rangers escorted visitors out of Debs Park this afternoon after a small fire brush began at the base of a hill near Hermon. Approximately 80 firefighters assisted by helicopters took about an hour to put out the blaze that was reported shortly after 2 p.m. near 5600  block N. Officials were trying to determined what caused the blaze, which could be seen from the nearby Arroyo Seco Parkway as it burned in the brush below Bushnell Way Elementary.

    Rudy Martinez

The Council District 14 candidate forum in Hermon last night  featuring Councilman Jose Huizar and business man Rudy Martinez was a relatively sedate affair with none of the mudslinging seen in the news blogs over the last couple of months. But then emotions and confusion arose when both candidates were asked the following prepared question:

“So far, what has been the most unfair claim your opponent has made against you in this race and why is he wrong?”

“I’ve had a difficult and challenging life,” Martinez responded before a small audience at the Hermon Church Fellowship Center. He then recounted the story about a DUI he received when he was 21 and for being arrested for fighting with a security guard at his father’s restaurant in an effort to protect his father. And then Martinez said something about his wife, Kim, that caught everyone’s attention at the forum: “I was accused of -  Kim , forgive me – beating my wife ”

At this point, Huizar interrupted, claiming that Martinez did not understand the question.  “I never ever said something like that,” Huizar said.

The vacant supermarket in the Monterey Plaza shopping center had many Hermon and Monterey Hills residents lobbying for a Trader Joe’s or a Fresh & Easy to replace the former Double Savers market. Instead, they got a Fresco Community Market, which plans a “soft opening” as soon as next week if it receives the necessary permits. Never heard of Fresco Community Market?  That’s because the 24,000-square-foot  store in Hermon will serve as the first outlet for what its Mount Washington owners hope will be a new chain of  Los Angeles markets offering a mix of traditional supermarket staples, specialty items and a chic industrial design.

Customers will be able to shop for Latino foods, organic produce and meats, take a break at a full-service coffee bar or pick up some prepared foods under the same roof, said Gary Orona, vice president of operations for Fresco.”We are a full blown store in a smaller, easy-to-shop environment.”

    Story by Valentina Silva

Hermon is the most elusive neighborhood in northeast Los Angeles. At least in my mind–I’d never even heard of it until I moved to Mount Washington. Just southeast across the Arroyo Seco Parkway from Highland Park, Hermon is such a quiet, hidden little area with plenty of house-proud, tree-lined streets.

One new perk in Hermon is the recently opened Pantry Cafe, which sits unassumingly on the corner of one of those aforementioned streets. The first thing you notice when you walk in is that there’s a lot to notice. The decor is pretty eclectic, with a large fake tree, zebra stripes, silly signs, antique trunks, and a loungy couch all taking part.

A year ago the residents of Hermon went searching for a market to fill an empty, 24,000-square foot building in a neighborhood shopping center. Inspired by personals ads, residents put together this sales pitch: “Single, hungry community seeking a fresh start with new, financially stable market chain willing to be the center of our life.” A tenant did step forward to lease the space but – as is often the case with those who take out personal ads – many Hermon residents have been left disappointed.
