Flames engulfed a car parked on a Los Feliz street Sunday afternoon but it’s not clear if it is connected to a rash of arson fires in Hollywood and the San Fernando Valley.  The fire was reported after 1 p.m. in the 4500 block of Melbourne Avenue near Hillhurst Avenue. The Silver Lake resident who took the phot0 and called 911 said firefighters  arrived within minutes to extinguish the blaze.  An email distributed by the Greater Griffith Park Neighborhood Council said the owner of the vehicle was having lunch at a nearby restaurant when the fire began:

The fire was set underneath a car parked on the 4500 block of Melbourne Ave. which is between Rodney & Hillhurst, and 2 blocks north of Hollywood Blvd.  The car owner had parked there to go have lunch around the corner. LAFD & LAPD are investigating …  Please keep your eyes & ears open and report any suspicious activity.

A person of interest was detained early this morning as part of the arson fire investigation, according to L.A. Now.

NeighborhoodWatchLogo.JPGA Los Feliz resident who lives near Claremont Avenue and Tracy Street came face-to-face this afternoon with a pair of young burglars:

I heard a knock at the door at around noon, but ignored it.  Shortly afterward, I heard loud noises.  Someone had gone around the back of our house and was trying to get our air conditioner out of our window.  I pulled aside the window curtain and saw two surprised young boys — about 12 to 13 years old — who then ran away.  There have also been two other burglaries on Claremont this month, so residents should be vigilant.

The resident called the police, who arrived soon after. The Los Feliz Ledger reports that there has been several recent break-ins in the Franklin Hills.

Whole Foods opening in Silver Lake? Don’t get your hopes up *

Update: Whole Foods says it has no plans for a Silver Lake store

    Monday, September 5, 2011

The banner hanging today on the chain link fence surrounding the former Circuit City  on the border of Silver Lake and Los Feliz announced what many residents have long dreamed of:

    Coming Soon!
    Whole Foods
    Market
    Silverlake

The sign quickly raised a lot of hopes but soon also generated questions as to whether this banner was a hoax.  A check on the Whole Foods website finds no announcement or press release about the opening of a new Los Angeles store. The Eastsider has contacted the Austin, Texas chain for comment. Until then, better plan on shopping at the Whole Foods in Glendale for the forseeable future.

    * Update on Monday, Sept.: Yes, it’s prank, reports LAist.

Los Feliz resident Karen Hodges wants to warn neighbors living near Griffith Park Boulevard and Wood Terrace of a recent coyote attack:

One killed a possum and left it in the middle of my front yard, which we found yesterday morning. Then yesterday evening,  at about 8:30 pm, we saw a coyote in the middle of our street approaching our yard but my friend yelled and chased him off by yelling and raising his arms. As the owner of a small dog, I just want other people to be aware and keep a close eye on their pets!

Google Map of Los Feliz shooting. The gunfire erupted in the 1900 block of Hillhurst Avenue parking lot following a confrontation between two groups of men Sunday. The 4 PM shooting took place across from the Alcove Cafe & Bakery, a popular Los Feliz restaurant, where many of the patrons dining outdoors heard shots and saw cars speeding down the street following the shooting, according to comments on Twitter. The Eastsider does not usually cover Los Feliz, but, in response to requests from readers for information about the shooting, Capt. Bill Murphy of the LAPD Northeast Division was asked to provide a rundown of events. Here are the details he provided via email:

“Yesterday at approximately 4 PM a shooting incident occurred at 1912 Hillhurst Ave, Los Feliz. Apparently, two groups of men (probably all Armenians) got into a confrontation in the parking lot of the location. Several shots were fired and ultimately four people were shot (one was shot and stabbed). All of the victims and suspects fled the scene before LAPD-Northeast units arrived. However, within a short period of time, we detained five individuals at two separate hospitals. All four gunshot persons received medical treatment and two were admitted to the hospital (one is in critical condition). The two that were released were brought back to Northeast Station for questioning.

We activated a homicide unit to piece this incident together. The investigation is on-going as to the reason for the shooting. We believe we detained a majority of the suspects/victims involved. No one outside of the two groups was injured during this incident.”

How far away can the noise of a rave concert be heard? The residents of Los Feliz and parts of Silver Lake now know the answer: about seven miles. That’s the distance between Los Feliz and the Los Angeles Sports Arena, which was the site last Saturday night of the Love Festival, a large rave music event held near USC. The baseline and sound from the outdoor concert was loud enough at times to be heard and felt several miles away near Griffith Park, prompting residents to complain to Councilman Tom LaBonge and Los Angeles Coliseum Commission. The complaints and concert noise might sound familiar to Echo Park residents, many of whom lost sleep over a techno music and dance concert at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, located next door to the Sports Arena, back in June.

“Did you have a sleepless night?” asks an email newsletter sent out by Greater Griffith Park Neighborhood Council this week. The council blamed the Love Festival:

“Many GGPNC stakeholders have complained about the loud thumping noise (music?) that vibrated through our area Saturday night until 4am Sunday morning. It actually came from a concert 7 miles away in the Sports Arena Coliseum area. This weekend’s concert went on with hours of thumping bass despite complaints about a similar Coliseum concert in late June. Did those complaints fall on deaf ears at City Hall despite apparent violations of the City’s noise laws?”

Coliseum Commission spokesman Jon Lee said the staff is looking into the complaints. Lee said it’s not clear why the two music events prompted so many complaints this year since they have been held in previous years without much notice – at least from residents in Echo Park, Silver Lake & Los Feliz.

“We are not denying it was an issue … but the event this past weekend has been going on for years,” Lee said. “We are talking with the sound company to see if they have done anything different’ this year.

A reggae concert is scheduled this Sunday at the Sports Arena. However, if Los Feliz and Silver Lake residents are kept awake by loud music this coming weekend they should hold off from complaining to the Coliseum Commission. The noise will most likely be coming from the bands playing outdoors at the Sunset Junction Street Fair. Keep your ear plugs handy.

    * Update: Los Feliz councilman Tom LaBonge’s response to resident’s complaints about the concert noise:

“My Field Deputy Mary Rodriguez has since spoken to Councilmember Bernard Parks’ office – since the Sports Arena is in his district – as well as the Coliseum’s general manager, Pat Lynch. She relayed the concerns addressed in dozens of complaints from both Los Feliz and Franklin Hills. She told him that this noise nuisance also occurred in June. Mr. Lynch has assured us that he will fully investigate the situation with sound engineers, determine why this problem occurred and rectify the problem. According to Mr. Lynch the festival has been going on for ten years and quite possibly one of the stages was moved or amplifying system was misdirected to the north, which caused it to reverberate to our neighborhood.

Many of you have raised the issue that noise ordinances may have been violated. I assure you that we will look into this as well. My staff will be delivering a copy of your e-mails to Councilmember Parks and to the L.A. Coliseum Commission. I expect to have this situation rectified before any other concerts at the Sports Arena.”
