Dashing for news at Echo Park & Sunset

When an Echo Park Avenue Dash bus pulls over to the curb, it’s not necessarily to drop off or pick up a passenger. Drivers hop out of their buses to grab a quick coffee at Chango. I once spotted one of the white and blue mini buses idling at mid block while the driver inspected a yard sale.

Early Tuesday morning, a northbound Dash about half a block away from an official stop pulled over beside the white wood box that is the Echo Park Newsstand. The bus door opened with a whoosh but the driver remained in his seat. Instead, the Spanish-speaking newsstand man, who had creased and folded a La Opinion, stepped inside, handed the paper to the driver, took his 50 cents and then walked back outside and sat down on his stool.

The Dash roared back to life and resumed its trip up the avenue. Whether the driver got out at the next stop to get a coffee I don’t know.
