Echo Park vendor bust in action

Vendors selling fruit at the intersection of Echo Park Avenue and Sunset Boulevard has been a tradition. So have illegal vending busts, like this one photographed late Thursday by a passerby named Oliver who sent these comments:

“The police and [a] bunch of thugs were rounding up the fruit vendors on the corner of Echo Park and Sunset. The Senora who sells the nopales was devastated. She was weeping and shaking uncontrollably while the cops and the “enforcers” surrounded her and the other vendors. I watched until a truck came and took all their wares, fruit and equipment and carted it away. They are just trying to make a living.”

The emotions and debate over illegal sidewalk vending never seems to go away. Neither do the vendors. A few hours after these photos were taken, a whole new set of vendors were set up across the street selling beverages to Madonna fans headed to her show at Dodger Stadium.
