Salvation at Salesian*

Salesian High School alumnus Councilman Jose Huizar was honored at the Boyle Heights school’s 50th anniversary celebration last month and spoke about how it changed his life:

“Growing up in Boyle Heights, I got into some trouble in middle school and attending Salesian literally changed the course of my life…. I’ve often said, without Salesian, I never would have become a councilmember. I am forever indebted to the staff and brothers and sisters for all they’ve done for me.”

So, what kind of trouble?

* Update: Rick Coca, Huizar’s spokesman, provided this info: “The answer to your question is something he’s talked about publicly, which is he got kicked out of middle school for fighting, eventually went to Salesian where he was told that he was expected to attend college, it was just a matter of figuring out where he was going to go.”
