Is the new code word for Mexicans?

The years long effort to build a new jogging trail and park at the Silver Lake Reservoir met with stiff resistance from some residents expressing concern about everything from increased trash to crime, according an LA Times story. But one of the more memorable objections, recalls Mia Lehrer, the architect behind the project, was was made by an individual at a community meeting who apparently had a fear of either outsiders coming to the neighborhood or of paper mache:

“We don’t want to see piñatas in the neighborhood.”

“That comment, the architect said, “stuck with me for years.”
