Echo Park neighbors rally to save “Billy’s Gangplank”

“We consider it a sculpture,” said Shire, who owns “Wacko!” and Luz de Jesus Gallery in Los Feliz, a landmark of its own. So do many of his neighbors, more than 30 of whom so far have written letters supporting Shire in his bid to keep the porch. If he fails to obtain the permit, Shire might be required to take apart the porch and his brother’s art, something Shire is dead-set against.

“It would mean dismantling it,” said Shire. But “I’m not going there.”
