Does the LAPD Police Academy need to sober up? The bar on the grounds of the Los Angeles Police Academy in Elysian Park is the site of a regular and lively party called Payday Wednesday. Officer Kenneth Aragon had been drinking at Payday Wednesday last week shortly before he was involved in a traffic accident in Atwater that left the 47-year-old man, a father of five, dead. The LAPD is now looking whether he was served too many drinks at academy bar or somewhere else, reports the LA Times.

The scene at the bar, which is operated by the Los Angeles Revolver and Athletic Club, and Payday Wednesday is much more low key than it used to be, according to the Times:

“Payday Wednesdays hold a particularly infamous spot in LAPD lore. Older officers tell sordid stories of wild, booze-fueled gatherings in the 1970s and ’80s, at which officers and female guests had sex in the academy’s garden. One well-known legend holds that a guardrail in front of a home set on a sharp turn in the road leading out of the academy was installed after several drunk officers failed to navigate the bend.”
