Echo Park agency to open one-stop social services center

The Sunset Boulevard storefront that newly painted a shade of tangerine (or is it watermelon?) marks the home of the new Echo Park FamilySource Center. The space marks an expansion by El Centro Del Pueblo, the longtime Echo Park social service agency that involved in everything from anti-gang programs to family counseling. Instead of sending people to different agencies for help with housing or taxes, visitors to the FamilySource Center will now find representatives from those groups – including Chinatown Service Center or Inquilinos Unidos – under one roof, said Conrado Terrazas.

“These agencies are now on site and can provide services directly and in their appropriate language,” said Terrazas. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa is scheduled to be on hand Thursday for the grand opening of the center and a city-sponsored tax preparation center.

Terrazas provided more details about the center and its services:

The Echo Park FamilySource Center program is a collaboration of El Centro Del Pueblo, Chinatown Service Center, 826LA, Elysian Valley United, Inquilinos Unidos, Salvadoran American Leadership Educational Foundation, Search to Involve Pilipino Americans and the City of Los Angeles. All of these entities will have their staff members at the FamilySource Center.

The Echo Park Family Source Center provides counseling, case management, emergency, parenting classes, pre-employment, employment, educational, resource library, youth leadership, mentoring, recreational, sports, legal, financial literacy and computer literacy services free of charge to the community.

These services will be offered at our new site at 1824 W. Sunset Blvd. and our long time site at 1157 Lemoyne Street.

Also, we are now a City of Los Angeles Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Site here in Echo Park, one of many available throughout the City Los Angeles, provides free tax assistance to the community. The City wants to ensure that all qualified residents take advantage of the Earned Income Tax Credit and the importance of doing your taxes. PricewaterhouseCoopers is adopting the Echo Park Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Site by providing volunteer tax preparers. We will provide free completion of the short form.

The free tax preparation service for the short form will be at our 1824 W. Sunset Blvd. site.
