Man sentenced for fatal Highland Park shooting

It was two years ago yesterday when 34-year-old behavioral scientist Christopher O’Leary was gunned down in an unprovoked attack on a Sunday afternoon after going to the store to buy cigarettes. Today, Associated Press reported that a judge sentenced his killer, 19-year-old Herbert Salvador, 50 years to life in prison for the “absolutely senseless” shooting near the corner of Lincoln Avenue and Avenue 46 in Highland Park. Salvador, who was 17 at the time of the killing, had moved to Highland Park only a week earlier, according to the LA Times. O’Leary, who worked to prevent sexually transmitted diseases for the Los Angeles County Health Department, and his wife, Michele Rose O’Leary, had just moved into a new house only three months earlier.
