Eastside Cinema

Welcome to The Eastsider’s semi-regular installment of online videos featuring Eastside neighborhoods and people.

“Visiting With the Bird Man” features an Echo Park homeless man who is seen near Alvarado Street and the Hollywood Freeway. He prefers to be called Ninja and, obviously, loves pigeons, according to a video by Mark Horvath, who was once homeless himself. “Where ever I go, they show up,” Ninja said of the birds.

There is never a shortage of strangeness going on at Echo Park Lake. But even the regulars must have been wondering what was going on when a group of dancers dressed in animal costumes showed up to move to the beat of “We Know Something” by hip hop group Jurassic 5. This 2006 music video was shot in several locations across Los Angeles, including a dance sequence by the lake that begins about 2 minutes and 40 seconds into the program. Watch that shark move! Thanks to Jonathan Williams for the video recommendation.

From dancing animals to dancing houses. No hip-hop here, however. This two-bedroom Glassell Park house being sold for $384,900 moves to a mellow, easy-listening soundtrack as rooms twirl in and out of view thanks to an unlimited number of special effects. But it’s not clear how all those fades and flips between photos of an outdoor barbecue grill and fridge are going to make buyers run over and make an offer on this “adorable” property.
