Police searching for suspect in Eagle Rock shooting

Police today said they were searching for a gunman who shot a 17-year-old youth Thursday afternoon near the Eagle Rock library and Eagle Rock Elementary School in what is described as a gang related shooting. The male victim and friends were walking in the 5000 block of Caspar Avenue when they exchanged words with the shooter, who later revealed and shot a gun three or four times, said Lou Vargas with the LAPD Northeast Division’s gang unit. (Earlier reports that the shooting was a drive-by were incorrect.) Preliminary information indicates that the 3:30 PM incident was a “gang-on-gang” shooting between members of two local gang, said Vargas. After the shooting, the victim, who was from Highland Park, apparently ran to the nearby library, where he was treated by Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics.

The victim is a student at Eagle Rock High School, located a few blocks east of the shooting. But it’s not certain whether the student was walking home from school at the time, said assistant principal Koh Ikeda. The school staff was preparing to distribute a statement on the shooting to students and parents, he said.
