Storefront Report: Tandoori tacos arrive in Silver Lake

What happens when you blend Indian spices and flavors with Mexican street cuisine? Diners can taste the results at the newly opened Cowboys & Turbans in Silver Lake. This offshoot of the Cowboys & Turbans found next to the El Rey Theater is located in the former Sunset Boulevard storefront that once housed Andiamo, a short-lived Italian restaurant. Restaurant owner Baba Ji has painted the interior a shade of cinammon, filled it with dark-wood tables and chairs and turned down the lights. Menu items include Tikka Masala and a Tandoori quesadilla. Why meld Mexican and Indian food?

A post from September on the blog FoundTrack explains:

“After a few drinks at the House of Blues one night earlier
this year, a munchies-craving Baba picked up a taco from a Mexican street cart, took it home, and started experimenting. He sprinkled some curry sauce on it, and so was born the idea for Cowboys & Turbans.”

The Silver Lake Cowboys & Turbans, which opened late last week, plans to hold a grand opening on Friday night, said an employee.
