Woman mugged in Angeleno Heights daytime robbery

The Angeleno Heights area was the scene of two street crimes Thursday, including an elderly woman who was mugged near the landmark Victorians of Carroll Avenue. The woman had to be treated for injuries after her purse was snatched – she may have also been doused with pepper spray – in a struggle on Douglas Street at Carroll Avenue, said Sgt. Michael Mabie with the Rampart Division. Residents who lived nearby said they heard screams shortly before 7 AM and saw the woman – described as an elderly Asian female – lying on her side. The mugger, described as an African American male, jumped in a pick-up truck and fled the scene, Mabie said. “I have not see anything there in a while,” Mabie said of violent crimes in the heart of the Angeleno Heights historic district, noted for large numbers of landmark Victorian and Craftsman-era homes.

On Thursday night a resident reported that a man was robbed on Laguna Avenue near Echo Park Lake. Sgt. Mabie said he had no record of the incident but a Laguna Avenue resident said police arrived on the scene shortly after the street robbery took place at about 11 PM. “The suspect/s jumped into a vehicle and drove in reverse up Laguna ave about 200 Yards, then turned the car around and took off towards sunset on Laguna Ave,” the resident said in an email.

Mabie said he knows of no connection between the Laguna Avenue and Douglas Street crimes.
