Atwater and Silver Lake share a Zip Code and maybe West Nile virus

Health officials on Thursday announced that “Silver Lake (zip code 90039)” was one of two places in Los Angeles County where dead birds infected with West Nile virus had recently been discovered, a sign that the virus – which is transmitted to birds and humans via mosquitoes – was still active in the area. It turns out, however, that the dead bird, a crow, was found across the Los Angeles River from Silver Lake in Atwater, where a resident on Glenfeliz Boulevard reported the bird, said Crystal Brown with the Greater Los Angeles County Vector Control District. However, before residents in Silver Lake – and other surrounding neighborhoods – assume their birds are West Nile-free, Brown said the dead crow found in Atwater could have come from another part of town. Regardless of where the dead bird was found, Brown said her agency advises all residents to drain stagnant water – where mosquitoes breed -from pools and other areas.
