Save the Date: What New York can teach LA about “sustainable streets”

When it came time to explore some innovative ideas about transportation, New York City turned to a native of car-crazed California and an alumnus of Occidental College: Janette Sadik-Khan. As New York transportation commissioner, Sadik-Khan (Class of 1982) adopted some novel approaches to improving mobility and increasing pedestrian safety, including the closure of some portions of Times Square (pictured above) to traffic. On Thursday night, Sadik-Khan returns to her alma mater to speak about what Los Angeles might learn from her department’s “sustainable streets” program during a free, 7 PM lecture at Keck Theater on the Eagle Rock campus. On Friday, the transportation commissioner will travel by bike and Gold Line train to Los Angeles City Hall. More Eastside events in Save the Date.
