Street names by number are easy to remember but the past is sometimes forgotten

The numbered avenues of Cypress Park, Highland Park and Lincoln Heights make navigation a bit easier. But many of these streets were once known by different names, some of which honored early residents. The fact-filled History of Lincoln Heights site includes a section on the origin of Lincoln Heights street names that reveal some of the names that gave way to numbers about a century ago. Here’s a sample:

Water Street is now Avenue 18.
Lecouvreur Street – named after Prussian-born surveyor and former county clerk Frank Lecouvreur – is now Avenue 23.
Hellman Street – named German-Jewish banker Isaias W. Hellman – is now Avenue 24.
Well Street is now Avenue 26.
Swain Street is now Avenue 35.
