Diving detectives make a big splash at Echo Park Lake

A team of LAPD divers searching for evidence at Echo Park Lake this morning drew a lot of attention, including questions and stares from park visitors as well as comments and photos – like the one above – on Twitter. Sgt. Steve Richards with the LAPD’s Underwater Dive Unit said the team was looking for evidence – a gun, in this case – that might have been thrown in to the lake. “Nothing found,” he said as the divers were packing up.

Richards said the dive unit is focused on port security but is called upon to conduct investigations and collect evidence in city lakes and other bodies of water. “Anything a detective can do, we can do underwater,” said Richards, who noted the team is equipped with water-proof video cameras.
