Juvenile in custody in connection with Silver Lake mugging *

A person who was walking on Tesla Avenue near Armstrong Avenue Tuesday afternoon was attacked and mugged by four youths, according to an email being circulated among Silver Lake residents:

“Yesterday, Tuesday, 3/30 there was a mugging in broad daylight on Tesla Ave at 4:30 p.m. Four Hispanic youths attacked and mugged at walker on Tesla Ave. near the corner of Armstrong and Tesla. Witnesses chased them, apprehended one at West Silverlake near Rowena and held him until the police arrived. The property was recovered.”

LAPD Sgt. Al Polehonki with the Northeast Division confirmed the details in the email. “One juvenile suspect is in custody and three are outstanding,” Polehonki said in an email “It’s an isolated incident. Northeast Detectives are investigating.” He advised residents “to carry a cell phone while you walk / run the reservoir and watch out for each other.”

* Update: The mugging victim, a 40-year-old man who wants to remain anonymous, called The Eastsider to clarify some of the details of the incident. He said he was taking a walk around the reservoir when a group of youths was grabbed from behind. One of the youths snatched his iPod before he was able to fend them off. With the help of witnesses, he was able to catch up and detain one of the youths. Perhaps that was a bit risky, but “I was mad that I got jumped from behind,” he said. The man posted his version of events in a comment.

  1. dark sweatshirts and dickies are not gang uniforms. cholo, yes, but not necessarily gang. kids wearing dark clothes are usually trying to avoid getting sucked into gang life. whatever they were, they were ballsy to attack in broad daylight. glad to know it ended relatively well.
