Occidental College steps out into the city’s cultural spotlight

The new president of Occidental College, Jonathan Veitch, had made it known that he wants the Eagle Rock campus to play a more prominent role in the city’s arts and culture scene. As a result, on Wednesday Occidental kicks off a first-ever Spring Arts Festival, five days of mostly free events ranging from musical and Shakespearean performances (pictured above) to screenings of experimental films and a day-long variety show called “Wonder Cabinet,” which mixes science, arts and film. “We have worked closely together for months to present this panoply of creative work,” said Irene Girton, chair of Occidental’s music department, in a press release. “The Occidental community, as well as our northeast L.A. neighborhood, will find ample opportunity in the festival’s five days to experience the arts in the fullness of their variety.”
