Powerless in Echo Park

A burned out electrical switch knocked out power to more than 1,000 Echo Park area businesses and homes last night and apparently triggered quite a light show for some residents before things went dark. The exact cause of the 2.5-hour outage has not been determined but it is believed to have started after problems with electrical conductors lead a switch to burn out near Sunset Boulevard and Lemyone Street, said DWP spokeswoman Maychelle Yee. The blackout that began after 11 PM left bar patrons at El Prado on Sunset Boulevard in the dark and might have been responsible for a burst of light and some strange sounds reported by residents across the area.

“My husband and I were sitting in our living room around 11:10 pm and all of a sudden we saw flashes of electricity going sideways around two sides of our second story apartment accompanied by strange warpy noises,” said Vivan Smith, who lives east of Echo Park Lake, in an email. “Definitely thought we would be toast for sure! There was no loud bang….and what’s with electricity making it up the hill and surrounding our apartment!?”
