A postcard from Echo Park’s past

It’s sometimes painful to look at old neighborhood photographs because you realize how much has been lost. Echo Park resident Scott Fajack was doing some cleaning up at home when he found an old postcard of St. Athanasius by the Lake, a Craftsman-style church that once stood at Echo Park and Laguna avenues, across from Echo Park Lake. The country-like church, designed by architect and Angeleno Heights resident Arthur Benton, was demolished in the early 1990s after the Episcopalian Diocese overcame community opposition to build the much larger Cathedral Center of St. Paul that now sits on the triangular parcel.
