Animal remains found in Elysian Park

A woman walking her dogs in Elysian Park this morning came across what looked like a heart lying on the ground near some bushes off Academy Road between Morton Avenue and Stadium Way. “Called 311. General Services Police came and took a look at it and they thought it looked like a heart, too,” the woman said in a posting on the Echo Park Animal Alliance message board. “The officer looked around and found a bag in the bushes … that might contain more ‘stuff.'” After cordoning off the area for about an hour, officers determined that the heart and other animal parts came from a pig. Last year a park visitor came across the remains of a goat – at first believed to be a dog – that some believed might have been part of some ritual sacrifice. Officers today said they had no idea why the animal was killed and dumped in the park.
