Catching a fish and a story down at Echo Park Lake

Echo Park resident Darrell Kunitomi was driving by Echo Park Lake today when he noticed a fisherman struggling to reel in a catch. Kunitomi, an avid fisherman himself, could not help but pull over and investigate. The fish turned out to be a five-pound bass, and the fisherman, Charlie Vasquez, and Kunitomi discovered they had mutual friends.

“He tossed [the bass] back in, catch and release. We chatted for a while, and I found out he went to Roosevelt, knew some guys I knew and is a minor celebrity in the music world. His name is Charlie Vasquez, drummer for Rosie and the Originals (Angel Baby).”

* Correction: A previous version of this story said that Kunitomi went to Roosevelt High. He did not. Kunitomi is a graduate of Belmont High.
