Holy sh–! The college chancellor said that?

Former LA Community College Chancellor Mark Drummond. Photo from LA City College website.Activists who have been tangling with the community college district over the former Van de Kamps bakery have dug up an email that should serve as a lesson to anyone in high office: never put anything in writing. The email in question was sent in April of last year by former Los Angeles Community College District Chancellor Mark Drummond to Los Angeles City College president Jamillah Moore. The college district had recently announced it would not open a satellite college in Glassell Park, instead leasing some of the space to a charter school. Moore advised Drummond via email that she was going to speak to an aide of State Assemblyman Kevin de Leon to address several issues raised by the assemblyman’s office about the charter school. A few hours later, Drummond sent Moore an email reply topped with  these words:  “fuk em.”

What Drummond meant by “fuk em” or who the words were directed to is not clear. A district spokeswoman said the emails – which were collected by the Van de Kamps Coalition – are authentic but could not explain why Drummond wrote “fuk em” in his reply. The former chancellor surprised many by taking a leave of absence last June. “The only person who could explain what he meant is Chancellor Drummond – and I don’t have any contact information for him,” said the spokeswoman. “My understanding is that he is in Dubai … or Abu Dhabi or somewhere in the Arab Emirates.”

Closer to home, The Van de Kamps Coalition, which was angered after the college district dropped plans for a Glassell Park satellite campus, certainly had something to say about the email. The profanity was an example of the college district leaderships’ disregard for the community, and a “shocking” misuse of standard American English, the coalition said in a tongue-in-cheek statement releasing the email.

“Every good English teacher would instruct a student that the proper
usage of that phrase is “Fuck them” and don’t omit the proper punctuation! It would be either a period or exclamation point, depending on the Chancellor’s mood in the middle of the afternoon.”
