One man injured in Echo Park stairway shooting

An 18-year-old man was shot Monday afternoon while sitting on a public stairway near Echo Park Lake. The victim, Michael Medina of Los Angeles, was sitting on the steps near Belmont and Bellevue avenues with a woman when a man with a handgun approached the couple, shooting Medina in the right side of his body shortly after 3 PM, said Lt. Wes Buhrmester with the LAPD Rampart Division. “The suspect ran down the steps, then onto Glendale Boulevard, fleeing on foot in an unknown direction,” Buhrmester said in an email. It appears the shooting was part a personal dispute, and there is no indication it was gang related, according to a preliminary investigation. Medina was transported to a hospital where he is in stable condition.
