A group of men armed with what was believed to be a baseball bat assaulted and robbed two male pedestrians in Silver Lake last night during separate incidents only blocks apart. Both incidents involved four male suspects with shaved heads and what the two victims described as a baseball bat. The two incidents took place about two hours apart, with the first occuring at about 10 P.M. Wednesday in the 3200 block of Larissa Drive and the second took place a few blocks west in the 800 block of Sanborn Avenue shortly at 12:15 A.M. today. In the first crime, “One of the suspects put the victim in a headlock, and demanded and received property,” according to a police report from the LAPD Rampart Division. The victim in the second incident was beaten numerous times but turned down medical treatment. The suspects were seen driving away south on Sanborn in a four-door American model sedan. “Property taken in both incidents was money and an iPod,” according to the report.
Police are fairly certain the same suspects were involved in both incidents and are looking to see whether they might be gang members, said Lt. Wes Buhrmester with the Rampart Division. Buhrmester in an email said:
Although the victims could not positively identify the suspects as gang members, their appearance and clothing lent themselves strongly toward gang membership, and we thus believe they are gang members. We haven’t seen this type of crime before by these described suspects. Our robbery and gang units are working concurrently on it this morning
* Correction: A previous version of the story gave the wrong location for the second assault.
The Silver Lake Neighborhood Council will be holding a town hall tonight to discuss Silver Lake crime south of Sunset.
