Two men assaulted in Silver Lake street robberies*

LAPD police helicopter over Echo Park.A group of men armed with what was believed to be a baseball bat assaulted and robbed two male pedestrians in Silver Lake last night during separate incidents only  blocks apart. Both incidents involved four male suspects with shaved heads and what the two victims described  as a baseball bat. The two incidents took place about two hours apart, with the first occuring at about 10 P.M. Wednesday in the 3200 block of Larissa Drive and the second took place a few blocks west in the 800 block of Sanborn Avenue shortly at 12:15 A.M. today.  In the first crime,  “One of the suspects put the victim in a headlock, and demanded and received property,” according to a police report from the LAPD Rampart Division. The victim in the second incident was beaten numerous times but turned down medical treatment. The suspects were seen driving away south on Sanborn in a four-door American model sedan. “Property taken in both incidents was money and an iPod,” according to the report.

Police are fairly certain the same suspects were involved in both incidents and are looking to see whether they might be gang members, said Lt. Wes Buhrmester with the Rampart Division. Buhrmester in an email said:

Although the victims could not positively identify the suspects as gang members, their appearance and clothing lent themselves strongly toward gang membership, and we thus believe they are gang members.  We haven’t seen this type of crime before by these described suspects.  Our robbery and gang units are working concurrently on it this morning

* Correction: A previous version of the story gave the wrong location for the second assault.

The Silver Lake Neighborhood Council will be holding a town hall tonight to discuss Silver Lake crime south of Sunset.

“Appearance and Clothing lent themselves strongly toward gang membership…” WTF is THAT supposed to mean? Ben Davis’, chuck taylors, tshirts, tattoos and shaved heads? Um… this IZ silverlake! I know many hipsters, trendys and bears that don similar attire! Good luck with that!

  2. I grew up in Chicago in gang territory. I always felt safe (minus the stray bullet thing) because they didn’t mess with you unless you were in a gang. It was their code. And a good one. I have heard different about gang members in L.A. I don’t know why they mess with civilians but they do. It’s wrong.

The sad thing is this is what they are raised to believe is right.

  3. Get real Michael. Hipsters don’t go around with baseball bats mugging and beating people up. Dont be so ignorant.

  4. They mess with us, plain and simple, because they don’t want to work and “a life of crime” is the alternative. It’s disgusting. Does anyone really want to get up early every morning and spend the better part of one’s day doing someone else’s bidding? No, but we do, because we are part of a society and we have at least basic respect for others. These people are trash. Even a drug dealers has 5 times more class.

  5. Afew weeks ago I was walking down the street a block or two from Logan Elementary School and a kid around the age of 13 or 14 threatened to beat me up if I didn’t hand him my Ipod. That was the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever experienced. After trying a few more times and not being successful, the kid just walked off.

I couldnt help but think what kind of trouble that kid would get into if his parents knew.

OMG Like I totally agree Michael!!!!
It must be all those awful Silverlake ‘bears’, stumbling out of MJ’s all jacked up on Amyl mugging people. Then with their all that booty they head back to the Cheese Store for a nice Brie plate.

  7. Get real Michael….9 times out of 10…young dudes with shaved heads = bad.

  8. Michael did it.

  9. I live in Silverlake, where the recent shootings occurred. I grew up in LA. Dressed like a banger or not, if you’ve been around long enough, a banger is pretty easy to recognize. I have yet to see a group of shaved headed hipsters with monochrome tattoos lurking in dark areas. Get real. If you see the jerks, call the damn cops. I do. I don’t want them in my neighborhood. Do you?

  10. if you live in any city, you have to practice street smarts. Plain and simple. This could have happened in any part of LA (or Chicago, or NY, etc.) I’ve been in Silver Lake for three years, but I’ve lived in NY and Chicago too. Sure Silver Lake has become hip, but hip does not equal safe. This is still not BH. Be careful people.
