Smile – school is back in session

The start of the new school year today for L.A. Unified students on the traditional semester schedule prompted teacher Rick Powels at  Clifford Street Elementary to send in the above photo of  the third and fourth graders who attended the Echo Park school in 1956. Powels, who teaches fourth grade and serves as the school historian, notes that Clifford Street Elementary began the new semester with new leadership and other changes:

“Excited about classes beginning Monday. Clifford Street School added sixth grade. Also we have a new principal, Ms. Armineh Alexan, who is coming from Cheremoya [Elementary].”

Clifford students were among the estimated 501,70 kids  who began classes today at the district’s “traditional calendar schools,”  according to L.A. Unified. Another 175,000 students in year-around as well as charter schools had already been attending classes since the new school year began on July 1.

  1. Anyone recognize anybody? How about a “now” photograph?

    • The teacher is Mrs. Bitzer, the boy at the upper far right is Phillip Reyes, I believe the boy next to him is John Long; others in the picture, I think, are Mary Yearkes (?) and Iyla Paddia (?)
