Police helicopter hovering over Echo Park *

A police helicopter hovering near Echo Park Lake for about an hour this afternoon has many residents wondering what is going.  An officer with the Rampart Division said that police had one person in custody as they investigated an incident near Echo Park Avenue.  He said officers were trying to determine if  a crime had been committed. The officer had no further details about the incident that touched off the police activity.

* Update: Lt. Wes Buhrmester of the Rampart Division said the police activity was probably related to a robbery in the Walgreens parking lot. More details:

“If this was going on around 11:25 a.m., at that time a strong-arm robbery occurred in the parking lot of Walgreen’s at Echo Park Ave. & Sunset Blvd. A male, possibly a transient, committed the act and fled on foot. Several Rampart units responded along with the helicopter. An area search followed, and a subject who fit the description was detained near the park. That subject was later eliminated as the robber, by conducting a field show-up. This consists of transporting a witness to the location of the detained person to view them. A search continued for a bit with ground units and the helicopter, however the suspect was not located on that date. A report was taken, and Northeast Detective Division will conduct the follow-up.”
