Police investigate officer-involved shooting in Cypress Park area

LAPD police helicopter over Echo Park.The LAPD is conducting a use of force investigation after officers shot at a robbery suspect who pointed a gun at them Sunday night near the border of  Cypress Park and Glassell Park.  Residents reported hearing gunshots – followed soon after by a police helicopter – at about 10 p.m. near Avenue 33 and Isabel Street.  No one was injured in the shooting, said Capt. William Murphy of the LAPD Northeast Division.  Murphy in an email explains what happened:

“We were out looking for a wanted robbery suspect (gang member) in the area.   The officers spotted him and attempted to detain him.  The suspect pointed a weapon at the officers who shot at him to protect themselves.   The suspect dropped the weapon (recovered) fled and was captured.   No one was injured and our Force Investigation Division is investigating the shooting.”
