Several blocks of Sunset Boulevard were closed this afternoon after the occupants of one vehicle traveling on Sunset Boulevard near Marion Avenue opened fire on another vehicle, leaving two people injured. The shooting on the eastern edge of Echo Park and Angeleno Heights took place at about 1:30 p.m. after the occupants of the two, eastbound vehicles exchanged words as the cars were side-by-side, according early reports provided by Lt. Wes Buhrmester with the Rampart Division. The two victims suffered what were described as non-life threatening injuries.
Sunset Boulevard has been closed from about Elysian Park Avenue to nearly Figueroa Street. “A search for the suspect is under way, and our gang detectives are at the scene, as that appears to be the motive,” Buhrmester said.
Detectives are going over the victims’ car, a white sedan that is parked near the shooting scene inside a car wash at Sunset Boulevard and Everett Street. One woman who works near the shooting scene said she and a customer dove behind a desk after hearing at least five gunshots. “After the gunshots, [the vehicles] just squealed away.”
One vehicle not involved in the shooting collided with another vehicle as the motorist tried to get away from the gunfire, reports Buhrmester.
It was only last week, on Monday, Dec. 6, when Sunset Boulevard and Marion was also blocked after police searched for a suspect in Angeleno Heights following a possible gang-related shooting.
Update: L.A. Now reports that police have arrested a suspect. Sunset remained blocked to all traffic as of 3:30 p.m.
