Police extinguish small Echo Park house fire

A pair of officers responding to a residential burglary alarm in Echo Park this afternoon found themselves faced with a  small fire instead of a crime in progress. Officer J. Padilla said he and his partner found the front door of a house in the 1800 block of Morton Avenue open and the strong smell of smoke.  Once inside, they found what looked like a small pile of clothes near a floor furnace on fire. The pair quickly retrieved a fire extinguisher to put out the blaze, which broke at about 4 p.m. One of the residents of the house who was on the second floor of the building at the time was not injured. Padilla said they could not find evidence of a burglary.  Firefighters arrived within a few minutes to make sure the blaze had been extinguished.
