Highland Park fire forces Figueroa Street shut down*

A four-block stretch of Figueroa Street in Highland Park is expected to be closed until late afternoon today as firefighters clean up and investigate a blaze that broke out in a tire shop.  Figueroa between Marmion Way on the south and Avenue 43 on the north has been closed since after 1 p.m. when a fire was reported at a tire shop at  Figueroa and Avenue 41, said Battalion Chief Chris Kawai.

The fire was limited to two storage rooms and no injuries were reported. However, fire fighters will remain on the scene and Figueroa will remain closed for “several hours,” Kawai said at about 3:30 p.m. He said that  crews need to make sure that there are no hot spots or smoldering material left behind.  “There are hundreds of tires,” Kawai said of the pile of debris that firefighters must comb through.

* Update @ 5 p.m.: Fire units have been cleared to leave the scene.
