New home brewing supply store taps into Eastside market

Robert Lamb of Silver Lake brews his own beer as a hobby. But buying supplies often meant shopping online or driving across town to Culver City to stock up at Culver City Homebrewing Supply, one of the few places in the area that sells the malt, bottles and other supplies used by beer makers like himself.  But, as of last Saturday, Lamb has a choice closer to home after Culver City Homebrewing opened a second outlet, Eagle Rock Home Brewing Supply, at 4981 Eagle Rock Blvd. “Glad to see them finally opening up on the Eastside, since it’s nice to get personal attention, and their prices tend to be better than what I’ve found online,” Lamb said via email.

Kevin Koenig, c0-owner of Culver City Homebrewing, said the Eagle Rock store in a former contractor’s showroom is designed to cater to the many customers that drive in from Pasadena, Burbank and Echo Park.  “This will be a closer place for all of them,” Koenig said of the 1,500-square-foot shop.

In addition to home beer brewers, Eagle Rock Homebrewing, which Koenig opened up with partners Greg Geron Thomas Galvin, also caters to makers of homemade wine, cider and other fermented beverages. Items include beer and wine kits as well as specialty grains, yeasts, hops and even bottle caps.  “Our business has grown steadily and that’s why we have decided to give it a shot at another store,” Koenig said.

Eagle Rock Homebrewing will eventually expand its hours and plans are in the works to offer classes. Click here for hours and other details.

  1. I’ll drink to that! Cheers and good luck.

  2. Maybe it’s time for a new hobby!

  3. finally! This has been in the works for several months now. I’ve been waiting to buy the equipment until they actually opened so I guess I know what I’m doing this weekend!

This has been too long in coming. I haven’t been to the Culver City store as I drove across the Valley to another shop in Woodland Hills, but I most certainly will be heading over to Eagle Rock this weekend!

  5. We’ve been brewing our own and have been going to the Palms to get our equipment. I’d like to give this place a try and support small business in the neighborhood.

  6. If the Culver City store is any indication this new location will be fantastic! Can’t wait to make weekend trips here from downtown LA; plus it puts you in close proximity to Eagle Rock Brewery!

  7. Brewing supplies is critical to a successful brew day. There are two homebrew supply stores in the Valley and the West Side, both of which are a long drive for me and other friends.

The homebrewing hobby is growing steadily every year, which means that supply stores will finally become a profitable enterprise. This is good news for brewers like myself due to the convenience of store locations.

If you are new or seasoned, you should join a local club for good tips on brewing better beer, like Maltose Falcons (www.maltosefalcons.com), or other clubs in Los Angeles.
