Police searching for stolen vehicle suspects in Echo Park

Police on Laguna Avenue. Photo by Mark Hefflinger

A police helicopter was hovering northeast of Echo Park Lake this afternoon as officers on the ground were searching for persons suspected of stealing an SUV. The search was focused on the area near Crosby Lane near Laguna Avenue. Police had been pursuing the vehicle as it raced north on the 101 Freeway before it exited at Echo Park Avenue at about 12:30 p.m.  Police have closed off some streets in the area and at least one suspect is in custody, according to early reports.

Update: Police reopened Laguna Avenue at about 2 p.m. but Park Avenue near Echo Park Avenue remained closed off with flares, reports one resident.

  1. In fact a good number of LAPD units have taken over the entire street on Kensington Rd between Laveta and Crosby. Helicopter is still hovering and circling above. It caught my attention about 30 minutes ago when I heard an officer shouting “Put your hands up!”…..

  2. It’s about 10 pat 1PM and the chopper is still hovering. I thought Obama might have made a wrong turn and ended up in our hood.

  3. Well, my neighbors are at the Center as we cannot go to our homes on Laguna as of 2 pm. Heard they are searching the Cathedral for suspect. Any updates?

  4. I’m on Laguna, the stolen SUV stopped just outside my house. Saw one of the suspects run away on foot right as the first squad car arrived. Think he ducked up the stairs at the church building, and into that courtyard that connects with stairs down to Echo Park Ave. The cops said they caught that guy. The other suspect apparently went up the stairs that connect Laguna to Crosby/Kensington, and was at large. I emailed some photos to Jesus…
