Volunteers needed for a “literary canopy” raising

The sun-baked patio behind the 826LA reading and tutoring center in Echo Park will get some welcome shade in the form of a “literary canopy” that will be installed this weekend. The “Superscript” canopy, a project conceived by Materials & Applications in Silver Lake,  consists of triangular panels that have been cut and perforated with words and phrases, some of them submitted by 826LA students. The panels made from Tyvek, a water-resitent material used in everything from home construction to envelopes, have already been cut but volunteers are needed on Saturday and Sunday, May 28-29, to finish fabrication of the panels and to lift the canopy into place. Click here details.

Once “Superscript,” which was designed in partnership with Kate Moxham, is up in place, the sun shining through the perforations will project the words and phrases to the patio below, including this phrase submitted by an 826LA student: “Big kitty spaceship packs everything.” Please RSVP before you show up by sending an email to contact@emanate.org, Volunteers are needed from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m.
