Atwater awaits another summer of outdoor movies

For a handful of evenings this summer, a section of the Los Feliz Municipal Golf course will be converted into an outdoor cinema for Atwater Village Movie Night. The first of five, free films – Superman – will be screened  this Friday, June 17. If previous movie nights are a guide, expect a couple of hundred adults and kids to watch the movie, picnic and play, said Leonara Pitts, co-chair of the Atwater Village Neighborhood Council, which sponsors the movie nights with the support of neighborhood businesses.

Pitts is one of three members of a committee that selects the pictures after an informal polling of neighbohrood stakeholds.  In addition to Superman, this summer’ sline up inclues “Back to the Future, “Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark” and “Wall-E.”

“We usually average about 400 people per show, but we’re expecting those numbers to grow even bigger this year,” Pitts said via email. “People are encouraged to picnic, the kids run wild all over the course, people shout out classic lines. It’s quickly becoming another great Atwater Village tradition.”
