Eagle Rock resident Jose Hernandez came to Los Angeles from Spain nearly a decade ago to study electric guitar and pursue his dream of a career in the music business. The guitarist and singer eventually joined and became the lead singer for Sonsoles, a “global musical” ensemble with members hailing from Mexico, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador and Los Angeles. Don’t expect the 32-year-old Hernandez to perform classical Spanish guitar. Sonsoles is a Spanish rock band influenced by music ranging from folk and pop to Reggaeton and salsa. Hernandez has been honored as a alternative music guitarist. On Friday, Hernandez and Sonsoles will hold a release party and concert for its new album, “Otra Vez.” If you don’t want to travel to Long Beach for the show, you can always sample of Sonsoles music online or wait until their next Eastside performance.
Hernandez teaches guitar by day and also transcribes music for Guitar Hero. But Sonsoles remains his creative and personal focus. Said Hernandez:
The band is “my main project and my life revolves around it on many levels: I love writing with the guys…they are my best friends… [Sonsoles] helps me to become a better professional and hopefully, some day, a successful artist… [and the band is] one of the main positive forces I have in my life.
